    Other Side Of Maleficent

I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    Disney To Feast In France

The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

    Renegades of Animation: Pat Sullivan

Pat Sullivan became famous worldwide for his creation of Felix the Cat. What most animation histories gloss over is Sullivan’s checkered past and longtime standing as a wildcat renegade. He didn’t follow the rules. And he made damn sure to fully protect his intellectual properties.

    Yep!
    1. Who Killed Cock Robin? is a nursery rhyme.
    2. Rather morbid if you ask me, but the robin is genuinely dead in the poem, but in this version, Cupid shot him, so he's A-Okay. (Hey, this is a Disney short.)
    3. Three birds are brought in for questioning. Since none of them will confess that they did it and no one knows who did it, and with the prompting of Jenny Wren, the Judge decides that all three birds shall be hanged. That's when Cupid shows up to confess to his "crime"

Ok. Here's one I saw on YouTube for two nights running:

    1. Like many others, I start out in a song.

    2. I descend from the sky in wintertime.

    3. The woman who sang about me was related to one who began his career in the ER.

The character I thought of is already on the list, so I'll need to think about it more.

Ok, these are the last three clues:

    4. My short is less than three minutes long, to match the song's length.

    5. It mostly airs in Chicago at this time of year, along with another stop-motion short about a trio of elves.

    6. The cartoon was produced by an Asian.

Would this happen to be Suzy Snowflake?

As a matter of fact, it would. Now to explain the clues:

    1. Suzy Snowflake started out as a character in a song just like Rudolph and Frosty.

    2. Self-explanatory.

    3. The original song was sung by Rosemary Clooney, who, of course, was related to George Clooney, who starred in "ER," and went on to a number of popular movies.

    4. The short runs for two minutes and forty-four seconds, which is also the song's length.

    5. The cartoon mostly airs on WGN in Chicago, along with "Hardrock, Coco, and Joe," about three of Santa's elves.

    6. Both shorts were produced and animated by Wah Ming Chang for Centaur Productions.

So you go again, Saltyboot. Good work! :)

    Thanks! And here I go...

    Normally, my kind is nice.
In this short though, I am evil.
A little guy stops me by making the weather warmer.

These might have to be my last three clues because I'm not sure if I can come up with another set.

    I'm definitely not Frosty.
At the end of the cartoon, a fish had the last laugh.
The cartoon takes place way up north.

Ok, might as well give the answer. It's the monster snowman from "The Snowman."

    1. Normally, living snowmen are good guys.

    2. This one is totally evil.

    3. An Inuit(formerly Eskimo) uses the heat of the Aurora Borealis to melt him.

    4. Frosty he isn't. He's more like the predecessor of the Bumble.

    5. A fish he ingests has the last laugh when he uses the water from the melted snowman for a pond.

    6. The setting, of course, is Alaska.

And if I'm right, I pass my turn to either OUB or Rollo, the only ones who have yet to post a Christmas character.

This has been a hectic season for me. Overtime budget came through, so I'm working some extra hours for extra moolah. If I have any free time to put together some decent clues for a worthwhile character, it'll have to be Christmas Day.

Okay, a nice, easy Christmas-themed one coming up.

    1) This character is in the Public Domain, and has appeared in various media by different studios.

    2) This character was inspired by a real person. However, much of this character's appearance and methodology have changed over the years.

    3) One version of this character wears a mostly green outfit, and goes by another name. Of course, that version occurs outside the United States.

    It must be Santa Claus.

(although I was thinking he was already used)

Correct, Saltyboot, this is Santa Claus. The name has come up previously, never as the Mystery Character, but rather as an associate or acquaintance of the Mystery Character. Santa Claus, as I understand him, was inspired by Saint Nicholas, a bishop known for assisting the poor. One of his methods allegedly involved adding silver coins to the pockets of clothing hung out to dry. If Saint Nicholas couldn't enter a home, he would try tossing coins down the chimney in hopes that they'd be found among the fireplace ashes. And in his day, Saint Nicholas was a man of average height and build; it was the Coca-Cola Company that envisioned him as bearded and rotund. This is the version Americans know and love today. In Sweden, however, he's still lean, clean-shaven and wears mostly green, and is called Father Christmas.

After all the cross-cultural migrations ol' Saint Nick has gone through, I'm sure he'd be surprised at how he's changed. It's a phenomenon called memetic mutation.

Merry Christmas, fellow cartoonists. Be happy and well. :) And Saltyboot gets another +1, and control of the board. :D

Just to add a little more info... St. Nicholas is the patron Saint of children. Also, Dec. 6 is St. Nicholas day which is mostly celebrated in Europe.
    Anyway....

I'm not a holiday figure, but I'm usually seen with those who are.
I've been in both animated and live action form.
In one version, I have two stepsons who are about as compatible as fire and ice.
