Well, the subject matter is a no-brainer. I looked it up and only found one short, but there is little info about it, so I'm not sure.

I'll go ahead and guess that it's Mary Jones from MGM's Miracle at Lourdes.

Never heard of that one, Salty. But I can honestly say it's not her.

I really thought someone would come by last night with the answer. I can only provide three more clues:

5. My short was produced by Terrytoons rather than MGM.

6. I lack the skills of my fellow monks, so I go back to my day job to present my gift.

It is Cantalbert, from Gene Deitch's The Juggler of Our Lady (Terrytoons 1958) - I got it from your first clues, but I've just been watching it (to find out his name)!

To be honest, I want to sit this round out. I've been having a little computer trouble lately and don't want to leave you guys hanging if something should happen.

Well, I guess I'll go again, for I have a good one:

1. I seek ways to get rich, much to my wife's dismay.

2. I meet and buy a new friend at the glue factory.

3. My short precedes a well-known live action TV show with a similar premise by only two years.

4. Like the man in the live action show, I'm the only one my new friend can talk to.

5. I enter him in a race, hoping to have a big win.

6. I tell him to convince the other racers to let him win, but this fails miserably.

OK, let's see.. this is about a man who buys a horse... the TV show must be Mr Ed, which aired in 1961 - so we need a talking horse cartoon from 1959... (Googles frantically)

1. Oscar is a man seeking to make money the easy way, but his wife is against it.

2. He buys Gabby at the glue factory.

3. As Pete already mentioned, the short was released two years before "Mr. Ed" became a TV hit.

4. Gabby can only talk to Oscar, just as Mr. Ed could only talk to Wilbur.

5. Oscar enters Gabby in a horse race.

6. Gabby follows Oscar's advice to talk to the other horses, but later reveals they couldn't understand him--he forgot how to talk to horses!

2) Although unnamed in the series, I was based on a real character.
3) He didn't provide my voice, that was left to Paul Frees.

I'll have to look up Paul Frees's voice work for this one. Right now, I haven't a clue.
