    Other Side Of Maleficent

I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Renegades of Animation: Pat Sullivan

Pat Sullivan became famous worldwide for his creation of Felix the Cat. What most animation histories gloss over is Sullivan’s checkered past and longtime standing as a wildcat renegade. He didn’t follow the rules. And he made damn sure to fully protect his intellectual properties.

    Hey everyone.

I have a firm memory of what looked to be a 2D hand animated short from Canada or Michael Sporn's studio. I could never remember the name, but I know it appeared on a VHS tape compiled of other independent shorts.

It begins with a flock of mallard ducks taking off in early or mid November (grey skies, leafless trees) and then out from a bush comes a lone mallard duck who appears to have been left behind. Approaching two brown rabbits nearby it asks: "Where did the ducks go?" and one rabbit replies "They flew into the air." "I know that" the mallard retorts. "Then, they turned left." Says the second rabbit. The mallard gives an irritable sigh and flies into the skyline.

Along its journey, it becomes lost in the clouds and lands in NYC. Immediately bewildered, the mallard walks around the sidewalk for a while until it's met with a frog or a toad who pops it's head out of the sewer. It asks the duck:

"Hey, Mac. Are you a pigeon?"
    "No"
"Good, I don't like pigeons. Come on in."
    "Is it warm in there?"
    "Warmer than the street."

The mallard then takes a ride on the frog's make shift boat along the sewer stream until they reach another opening. The frog then helps the mallard up to the sidewalk, but it's then pestered by a bunch of pigeons hogging breadcrumbs and seeds.

From there my memory becomes hazy, but I do remember that the frog and the mallard become good friends and are joined with a couple of mice (or rats).

I also remember the ending, which was very touching. The mallard sees it's flock flying away and takes off to meet up with them abandoning it's friends. Feeling rejected, the rats and frog begin to walk away. "I guess ducks like ducks." says the frog. But before they get far, the mallard returns to the group. The frog asks "Did you come to say goodbye?" To where the mallard replies, "No. I already said goodby: goodbye to the ducks."

"You said goodbye to the ducks?" Asks the frog. And the short ends here.

I know for a fact that this was on a VHS compilation of something. But I can't place my finger on it. Any help would be appreciated!

Nope. Definitely not these. This short was probably done in the 80s. Early to mid 80s at best. I almost feel like it was an HBO special, too.

Hey let me know if you ever figure this out. I saw this short in the early 90s on the Disney Channel in a program block called Lunch Box. But I can't remember the name of it either

Okay, so after some digging I managed to come across the cartoon. It's called New Friends from 1981. It's based on the book "Howard" by James Stevenson. This short was included on a VHS of several other cartoons that were quite obscure. Hopefully I can come across it again. Anyway, here's the video on Archive:

New Friends : Stevenson, James, 1929-2017. Howard : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive

And talk about ironic coincidences, this was uploaded one week before my original post. And I never knew.
