You WIll Need To Reset Your Password!!!

We just moved hosts on this system, and this has caused a few updates. One is the way we encode and store the encoded passwords.

Your old passwords will NOT work. You will need to reset your password. This is normal. Just click on reset password from the log in screen. Should be smooth as silk to do...

    Sorry for the hassle.

    Other Side Of Maleficent

I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    Renegades of Animation: Pat Sullivan

Pat Sullivan became famous worldwide for his creation of Felix the Cat. What most animation histories gloss over is Sullivan’s checkered past and longtime standing as a wildcat renegade. He didn’t follow the rules. And he made damn sure to fully protect his intellectual properties.

In 1974, Hanna-Barbera knew that Saturday morning TV, be it live-action or animated, had to be educational. So it premiered "Valley Of The Dinosaurs," whose "leading man" John Butler just happened to be a science teacher. By using the natural resources at their disposal, he and his family built and demonstrated the uses of siphons, submarines, hot air balloons, and even elevators(a tree was used to get to a cave up on a cliff).

I didn't get into the show until its time slot changed from 10 to 11. But thankfully, I was able to see one of H-B's most unforgettable shows. My little sis was favorably impressed, too. Each episode showed someone from both families, most often Greg and Tana, getting into some kind of trouble. One episode showed a pair of men from a nomadic tribe seeing a small fire and deciding to leave it unattended. Big mistake, fellas! Luckily, the families were able to use a pumper to extinguish the blaze.

Although the Butlers wanted to leave the valley and return home, their efforts to do so failed every time. But I get the feeling that Katie had it bad for Lok, and didn't care if she stayed there forever. I mean, she accompanied him wherever he went, even when he ORDERED her not to in one episode. They were just friends during the show's run, but maybe there could be a sequel.....

The cave family considered the Butlers strange, since they kept mentioning things from back home like banana splits and Thanksgiving. But what do you expect from Cro Magnons?

The show even became a trivia subject, when a classmate of mine asked,"Who's the father of the cave people?" and another answered, "Gorok."

In early 1976, when I was required to present a science project in order to graduate from grade school, I decided my subject should be about an artesian well. That decision was inspired by, you guessed it, an episode of "Valley Of The Dinosaurs." And, yes, I did get a good grade for it. :)

Meanwhile, on ABC, that same year, HB introduced the live-action show "Korg: 70,000 B.C." Unlike the animated prehistoric series, this show strove to portray prehistoric man accurately. There were no dinosaurs in sight, and the tribe did all they could to survive in that era. I remember seeing one episode in which Korg's family witnessed an eclipse, and acted like it was Armageddon or something. The wife screaming, "Korg! Help!" reverberates in my mind to this very day. Too bad the show was cancelled in 1975.

Trivia Question 59: True or False. Greg and Tana disguised themselves as a saber-toothed tiger to save Glump from a pack of wolves.

    Answer: True.

Krofft's "Land of the Lost" had premiered in the same season on NBC to good ratings with a similar premise...Modern day family rafting and hitting a time warp back to prehistoric times and trying to survive.

"Valley of the Dinosaurs" was no "Flintstones" with the characters, prehistoric animals, and backgrounds drawn more realistically.

With the Butler father and mother being soundalikes for Race Bannon or Zandor (voiced by Mike Road) and Wonder Woman (Shannon Farnon)...the Butler kids and their cave family friends are in good care.

Valley of the Dinosaurs hits my taste as one of HB's gems in the hiding. Originally i recall the show having a short period airing on weekday mornings, where in a similar vain to Sealab, my younger self just didn't get it all the way yet, but I do recall digging it more than Sealab back then. It's weekday run i remember not being that long before it ended up in the Boomerang block rotation. So when the DVD came, it was time to dive back in.

Modern man in a land of long since dead animals was an adventure hallmark long before this show, thanks to enjoyig works of Conan Doyle. Rice Burroughs and Verne, probably inspire my interest in that side of the premise. I also dig this one went for realistic (well for the most part) past animals. Since Dino Boy was in a lost valley yet his valley seemed more populated with Alex Toth monsters than real animals. But the background setting is only one part to Valley's nice puzzle.

The characters in this show are it's best point. With ten main characters, i adore each and every one of them. I feel like we get to grow with them as their adventures continue in the valley. The many regular interactions play off one another really well too. I feel like that helps balance with the science lessons (again mostly pretty good, not sure about polishing that turtle shell but oh well) and make the show appear to find a very good mix. Some of the episodes themselves were very good, the one where the Butler's gave up their radio to save Gorok is especially noteworthy in how well it plays out. Another one of my faves is John outsmarting the sky people with a catapult. I was pretty sad at the end that it was it for Gorok, his family and the Butler family.
