MeTV Toons is (almost) Here!

Starting Tuesday, June 25, MeTV's all cartoon over the air subchannel hits the air.Need I ask how many of you plan to watch ?

I probably will...if my MeTV affiliate WOIO carries it.

I would have had a desire to record some of the streaming cartoons such as Mister T, but unfortunately I get a black screen whenever I export the recording nowadays - possibly due to Canadian laws.

Then again, I am in Canada, so it wouldn't matter since MeTV Toons is not available in my country.

I did read comments on Facebook about the cartoons being shown, and there doesn't seem to be much from the late 1970s through 1980s on there (and that was perhaps the most favorite era for Saturday morning cartoons for mostly younger Generation Xers, in my opinion). Even the Richie Rich cartoons on that site, I would have hoped for the Hanna-Barbera series, but instead it was the short-lived DiC version from 1996 in which the character designs were not appealing to me (though it was true to the comic book version, I prefer the Hanna-Barbera version more).

There seems to be mostly cartoons from the 1950s, 1960s and 1990s, and very few from 1970 to 1989. I find that most of the cartoon series being offered in the first weeks of the network are considered "cult classics" - the network chose to air series that were the cream of the crop, and any short-lived cartoon series would air on Saturday nights during the late night hours when just about many Americans are in bed asleep.

Also, I learned that the cartoons are designed for adults only - in other words, the cartoons that today's adults grew up with when they were kids. The commercials shown are strictly adult stuff - there are no commercials for toys, sugary cereals, candy, etc. Teletoon Retro in Canada was in that same predicament when it aired a decade ago.

Aside from Mister T, the only vintage cartoon series I would enjoy on that channel are Scooby-Doo Where Are You! and The New Scooby-Doo Movies - since the human characters look more realistic as opposed to human characters on Flintstones, Top Cat, etc. But thankfully, I ordered the almost complete series of The New Scooby-Doo Movies on DVD, and I should receive that DVD set in the coming week or two. I do plan on buying the complete first two seasons of Scooby-Doo Where Are You! sometime down the road. It's too bad that only the first season of Mister T was released to DVD - if there were subsequent seasons on DVD, I'd buy them.
