    Other Side Of Maleficent

I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    Renegades of Animation: Pat Sullivan

Pat Sullivan became famous worldwide for his creation of Felix the Cat. What most animation histories gloss over is Sullivan’s checkered past and longtime standing as a wildcat renegade. He didn’t follow the rules. And he made damn sure to fully protect his intellectual properties.

Yesterday (Monday, November 26) marked the 70th anniversary of the premiere of the film classic Casablanca, starring Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman and a host of superb supporting actors.

Today in Casablanca, there is a real Rick's Cafe, which opened in 2004. "I was amazed in my four years here that no one ever thought of establishing a Rick's Cafe," recalled its owner, Kathy Kriger. The piano player is named Issam, not Sam, but repeatedly plays the movie's theme song, "As Time Goes By."

The movie has been referenced many times in cartoons:

Garbage Pail Kids: "Kinky Kong"/"Chris Messin' August"
The film's last line is quoted.

    Hare Force (1944)
The song "As Time Goes By" is heard.

    The Unruly Hare (1945)
Bugs sings "As Time Goes By."

    The Grey Hounded Hare (1949)
Bugs says, "This looks like the beginning of a beautiful friendship."

    American Pop (1981)
Benny plays "As Time Goes By" on the piano. This is a direct reference to Casablanca, which also makes use of the song in a similar fashion.

She-Ra: Princess of Power: "The Sea Hawk" (1985)
Adora says, "Something tells me this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship."

    Pound Puppies: "Wagga-Wagga" (1986)
The Wagga Wagga scene and the ending are inspired by Casablanca.

    DuckTales: "The Uncrashable Hindentanic" (1987)
Launchpad says, "If that blimp leaves the ground and I'm not at the wheel, you'll regret it; maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon, and for the rest of your life."

    Garfield's Babes and Bullets (1989)
In this TV-movie, Garfield quotes (and misquotes) several of Casablanca's more popular lines.

    Garfield's Feline Fantasies (1990)
The villain is similar to Signor Ferrari, and the ending to the TV special spoofs when Rick and Ilsa meet for the first time in a long time.

Tiny Toon Adventures: "The Wacko World of Sports" (1990)
Buster (imitating Humphrey Bogart) says, "Here's looking at you, kid."

    Muppet Babies: "Kermit Pan" (1990)
Humphrey Bogart says, "Here's looking at you, kid."

An American Tail: Fievel Goes West (1991)
Miss Kitty utters lines that parody "We'll always have Paris" and "Here's lookin' at you, kid."

    Batman: "The Last Laugh" (1992)
Joker: "Captain, I have a feeling this is a start of a beautiful friendship."

    Batman: "Harley and Ivy" (1993)
Ivy: "I have a feeling this is a start of a beautiful friendship."

    Animaniacs: "Casablanca Opening" (1993)
    Spoofed.

Casablanca Parody (Animaniacs; Warner Bros. Television Animation, 1993)
Dot loses control when acting out a famous scene with an animated Humphrey Bogart.

The Simpsons: "Sweet Seymour Skinner's Baadasssss Song" (1994)
Commenting on the end of his and Bart's friendship, Principal Skinner says, "We'll always have the laundromat."

Captain Planet and the Planeteers: "Who's Running the Show?" (1995)
    "Here's lookin' at you, kids."

Carrotblanca (Looney Tunes; Warner Bros., 1995)
A Looney send-up of Casablanca, with Bugs as Bogart. This cartoon marked the first speaking role for Penelope (the lady cat).

Duckman: Private Dick/Family Man: "Noir Gang" (1996)
One of the scenes is set into Rick's Cafe with "As Tears Go By" as soundtrack. A Rex lookalike was accused by Duckman as the third most suspicious character.

The Simpsons: "Two Bad Neighbors" (1996)
The final moment of the episode with Homer and Gerry walking away mirrors the ending of the film.

The Simpsons: "Bart the Fink" (1996)
Krusty's offshore banker is modelled on actor Sydney Greenstreet, particularly his role in this film, owing to the line "Oh, it's too hot today!"

    From Hare to Eternity (1997)
Bugs says, "Now that looks like the beginning of a beautiful friendship."

Casablanca Outtakes (Fun With Real Audio; TV Funhouse, 1997)
Bogie can't withhold his gas during filming.

The Simpsons: "Natural Born Kissers" (1998)
Bart and Lisa find an "alternate ending" to Casablanca. After Ilsa's plane takes off, Captain Renault and Rick Blaine walk off into the fog, and Rick delivers his "Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship" line. Renault stops and pulls out a gun. Sam appears and pushes his piano into Renault, knocking him out. Adolf Hitler then pops out of the piano, and threatens Sam and Rick with a grenade. Ilsa, having jumped out of the place with a parachute, lands on the piano top, trapping Hitler inside as the grenade explodes. Ilsa and Rick marry, and "The End?" flashes on the screen.

Family Guy: "Death Has a Shadow" (1999)
The guys watch a pornographic movie at a party, titled Assablanca.

    Hey Arnold! The Movie (2002)
Scene spoofed in the rooftop scene.

The tune of "As Time Goes By" plays, and Homer acts like the character Rick.
