    Other Side Of Maleficent

I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

Is there any way to break down who actually did what in regards to all three seasons of Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels (1977-80)? And I am talking about this in the fields of: story, story editing, story direction, voices, character design, layout, animation, backgrounds, etc.

This is impossible to research because for syndication, all Hanna-Barbera did was graft the Scooby's All-Star Laff-A-Lympics closing credit scroll after the first three screens showing the production credits superimposed over a scene from a Cavey episode. That sadly meant the season 3 episodes from 1980 lost their original closing credits, if ever they existed on the ABC Saturday morning run from that time period (March 8-June 21, 1980). It also doesn't help matters that part of the crew from the 1969-77 Scooby-Doo episodes (from Scooby-Doo, Where Are You to The Scooby-Doo/Dynomutt Hour) are also listed in the 1977 credit scroll.

For starters, the main voice credits are:
    Mel Blanc as Captain Caveman
Gary Owens as opening title narrator
    Laurel Page as Taffy Dare
    Marilyn Schreffler as Brenda Chance
Vernee Watson as Dee Dee Sykes

However, it is easy to find out who did what for both the The Scooby-Doo Show and Dynomutt, Dog Wonder segments making up The Scooby-Doo/Dynomutt Hour, as well as the Laff-A-Lympics segments of Scooby's All-Star Laff-A-Lympics and Scooby's All-Stars.

With regards to Captain Caveman, I remember seeing on Laff-a-Lympics reruns around 1988, I saw an episode where a girl character with brown hair in a Captain Caveman segment appeared to be barefoot and wearing tattered clothes. Was it Brenda Chance, or who was it? And did that girl only appear that way for that one particular episode, or did she appear barefoot and wearing tattered clothes throughout the run of Laff-a-Lympics?

Never mind. After checking Wikipedia, the girl I was referring to was Daisy Mayhem, who was an original character on Laff-a-Lympics. Her appearance resembled a hillbilly - no wonder she was barefoot.

Mel Blanc also did the vocals for the various prehistoric animals stored in Cavey's club.

Presumably her name (if not her character) was a reference to "Daisy Mae Yokum".

Yes, the character's name was a play on Daisy Mae Yokum from Li'l Abner. However, the actual Daisy Mayhem character was loosely patterned after another Li'l Abner character, Moonbeam McSwine.

For the record, Daisy Mayhem was on the Really Rottens team, while Brenda Chance was on the Scooby Doobies team. It would seem that all 4 characters were added as replacements for the Josie and the Pussycats characters.

Originally, Melody, The Cabot Twins and Sebastian the cat (from Josie and the Pussycats) and Jeannie (from H-B's Jeannie) were going to be on the Scooby Doobie's team, but the rights for the characters couldn't be secured from Archie comics (who owns the Josie characters) and Columbia Pictures Television (who owned the I Dream of Jeannie characters), respectively. Babu (from Jeannie) could be used because he was an original character created by H-B. Jeannie was replaced with Hong Kong Phooey, and the Josie characters were replaced with Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels.

I know for season 3 (spring 1980) Don Morgan supervised layout with John Ahern (who did so for seasons 1-2). Key layout for season 2 (1978-79) was by Terry Morgan and Warren Marshall (the latter of whom founded XAM! Productions along with John Ahern), while John Tucker was a likely candidate for season 3.

Similarly, the original captains of the Really Rottens team were supposed to be Dick Dastardly and Muttley from Wacky Races, but since WR was a co-production between HB and Heatter-Quigley Productions, again the rights to D&M couldn't be secured in time. Instead, HB re-used Mumbly (a newer character from the Tom & Jerry/Grape Ape/Mumbly Show, a police lieutenant who bore a striking resemblance to Muttley) and an original Dick Dastardly lookalike named Dread Baron to head the Rottens team. Interestingly, in the South American dub of Laff-A-Lympics, Dread Baron and Mumbly were called Dick Dastardly and Muttley. Also interesting: Dastardly and Muttley guest starred in a single issue of the 13-issue Laff-A-Lympics comic book series; in said issue, it was revealed that Dick and Dread were in fact brothers.

Daisy Mayhem was voiced by Marilyn Schreffler who played the voice of Brenda Chance in "Captain Caveman".

Schreffler went on to play the voice of Olive Oyl in Hanna-Barbera's version of "Popeye" for several seasons in the 1980s. She sadly passed away in 1988 at the age of 42 from undisclosed causes.
