    Other Side Of Maleficent

    I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

Best Disney Deal I Never Passed Up!

    ~ Howdy, Folks!

    Well, I regailed you with my greatest Disney lost deal! Now, here is one that didn't get away! Around 1988 my wife and I attended a rumage sale at our church in rural Poway, CA. My wife found a mounted original Disney Cel from "The Jungle Book" (1966) of the elephant character Colonel Hathi who goes marching off aimlessly much to the endless suffering of his pride. The image was cut down on the left/right edges and measures about 6x8.5 inches. The mat is just a buff card stock sealed on the back with a little rubber stamp provenance that says, "A Souvenir of Disneyland" Price = $2.75.

    My wife and I tried to explain to the elderly lady who was selling it that it was worth a lot more the $2 she was asking! She said no, she wanted us to have it for that price because she could tell we really loved Disney stuff. My wife wouldn't hear of it and finally got her to take $10 for the matted cel. The cool thing about the complete item was the background. It was a color photostat from the correct scene with the Colonel as he marches thru the jungle. Seems what Disney did back in the day was to clear out the vast piles of animation from various features, cut them down to size, locate the background from the scence and then shoot a bunch of color background stats that could be easily inserted by the cast members lucky enough to be on that diabolical assembly line matting priceless cels into cheap Disneyland throwaways!

    Nice Find! Really good to know, that you and your wife saved such an item. For that price it might have been thrown out if it did not sell.

    When I met my future wife in 1975 we began an amazing animation love affair together. I made her go and see a Cinerama presentation of Fantasia. She learned all about Warners cartoons and met Bob Clampett, Chuck Jones, Bill Scott, June Foray, Clarence Nash, and more. But she was the real smart one though ... always bought highend Disney cels while I went for mostly junkier stuff. Thanks to my wife we'll be a little better off during our retirement days.

    they are called "Art Corner" cels because that is where they were sold- the "Art Corner".... If I am not mistaken, it was where the hamburger resturant and stage is just north of where the Rockets and people mover used to be. It was around that area, for sure. 2.75 sounds like what it originally sold for at Disneyland.

    It is unusual to be matched with the correct background- usually they just grabbed something that looked close... I have seen art corner pieces over backgrounds from completely different movies.

    In any case, Art Corner is where many if not most of the cels from the 1955- 1970 films come from! If it is in the original art corner matt, leave it all matted- do not take it apart for any reason!

    Thanks for the background on the "The Art Corner". Fascinating stuff! Of course there is no way I could be sure the background is the correct one for the cel. It just looks like the appropriate jungle scence from the movie. I think your right about using any old background. I've seen similar cels over the years. Sure makes me wish I had bought some of these back in the day!
