    Other Side Of Maleficent

I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    Disney To Feast In France

The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

    Renegades of Animation: Pat Sullivan

Pat Sullivan became famous worldwide for his creation of Felix the Cat. What most animation histories gloss over is Sullivan’s checkered past and longtime standing as a wildcat renegade. He didn’t follow the rules. And he made damn sure to fully protect his intellectual properties.

Rare or lost Chuck Jones/Dr Seuss films?

    Hi fellow cartoon addicts!

My fifth graders are doing the Seussical and I'm trying to find rare copies of the Looney Tunes/Chuck Jones Dr. Seuss films, mainly "Horton Hatches the Egg" and "The Tail of Gertrude McFuzz," since those are the subject of the play. I found some clips on Youtube but not the whole cartoons.

Also, it's been years since I've watched these classics, and while I usually hate censorship, I was wondering if anyone had seen them recently and had any advice about whether or not they'd still be "kosher" in a public school. I had a couple doubts...

    1. I read online that "Horton Hatches the Egg" originally had a scene where a fish commits suicide by shooting himself in the head. I'd be in hot water if I showed that in class, so I need the censored version.

    2. I remember the animated "Gertrude McFuzz" has Gertrude the bird going to the doctor, who shaves off her tail feathers. I recall some off-color humor where the shave exposes Gertrude's bare fanny, and the doctor is slapping her fanny with Calamine lotion, embarrassing the bird. Funny in some respects, but fifth graders might get the wrong idea :wacky:

Any advice where to find these rare cartoons and if school-friendly cuts exist?
    Thanks!

While not the best quality version-- this version cuts out the Peter Lorre fish shooting himself in the head. That's the version I used to see all the time on Cartoon Network.
The original uncut version can be found on disc four of The Looney Tunes Golden Collection, volume 6--but it is indeed uncut.

Thank you so very much ! I actually found a high quality version and I'm probably going to simply sit at my keyboard and skip the suicide scene.

Now I've become totally stumped on the Gertrude McFuzz short. I can't find any evidence that it ever existed, yet I clearly remember it, or at least the embarrassing shaving scene I mentioned. Truly a lost cartoon?

The edited version used to be on Cartoon Network.

Ted Turner had a traumatic event and he was concerned on showing suicide in cartoons.

Cartoons prior to 1950 weren't intended for children...not even Disney cartoons!

Ummm... no, sorry Carrie Lawlor. Those never existed. Seen the Chuck Jones Horton, own it, no fish suicide.

And a children's cartoon where a bird shaves and puts lotion on her "fanny" ???
    Um, don't think so.

I don't think Gertrude McFuzz has been animated. There is, however, a scene in Disney's Peter Pan where Mr Smee shaves a seagull's rear end (thinking he is shaving Captain Hook).

Is that what the OP was thinking of? I guess I was picturing something different ... ("fanny lotion"? :sour:)
