    Other Side Of Maleficent

I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

    Disney To Feast In France

The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Titled The Feast, the short looks to be based on the same stylized CG techniques used on last years Paperman, a more natural and hand-drawn look to computer animation.

    Renegades of Animation: Pat Sullivan

Pat Sullivan became famous worldwide for his creation of Felix the Cat. What most animation histories gloss over is Sullivan’s checkered past and longtime standing as a wildcat renegade. He didn’t follow the rules. And he made damn sure to fully protect his intellectual properties.

What's your favorite anime?

I like "Pokémon" too. Not to mention the old school animes like "Kimba," "Eighth Man," "Astro Boy," "Marine Boy," "Prince Planet," "Gigantor," "Speed Racer," and "Battle Of The Planets." :)

If you mean Current Series and Movies there are almost too many to list, but here goes. "Robitics Notes" wonderful SI FI, "Girls Und Panzer" a great alternate future universe story with Moe girl characters, "Another" a gripping horror story, "Lupin Fujiko Mine" a new nice animation style for this off shoot of the Lupin The Third movies and TV Series, about one beloved character with the usual comedy and a Dark Backstory, lastly "Hatarku Maou-Sama" "The Devil is a Part Timer". Available only as an Import with subtitles so far, a very funny SI FI plot, the Devil after loosing a key battle has to live in our future world in Japan and figure out how to survive. Nato. I haven't actually seen any new anime series in a while- mostly for lack of looking. I should make an effort to check out some of the more highly regarded new series, but as of yet I just haven't had the inclination.

So far, Mononoke Hime remains my favorite feature-length anime. However, there's no clear favorite among television series anime. The most recent one to run past me was Trigun, with Vash the Stampede. I get a kick out of Millie Thompson, who is mostly a moë character that happens to be a Gentle Giant. That is, unless wickedness is detected, wherein Millie will whip out a minigun and liquefy the evil. Silk Hiding Steel, all right.

The ten Anime on artytoons list are all great ones from out of the past, I have watched or repeat watched all of them, but as new shows and movies come out Anime from the past into (onto) my faves from when I first started watching. To that list I could easily add "Slayers", and one of my all time favorite Anime character's is Modoka From KOR. nATO sALT lAKE ,UATH.

I would add Serial Experiments Lain, the first season of Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex, and the first Fullmetal Alchemist (not Brotherhood).

Those additions are also great shows, I think "Lain" is wonderful. I would also add "Paranoia Agent" directed by the late Satoshi Kon, who also directed a number of movies like "Tokyo Godfathers" a wonderful Christmas Movie. Another great TV series is "Last Exile". It is steam punk Si Fi. Nate Goodman (Nato). Salt Lake, Utah.

Well, I've had the chance to watch Appleseed, with its CG rendered characters, most notably heroine Deunan Knute. Perhaps too many plot twists for my aged brain. Why were Deunan and company fighting killer robots in the old derelict city if there was no longer a point to the conflict? And how could the Council that's composed of old grunks on hover-bubbles shut down Gaia, the central computer that controls everything and nobody notice a difference? And if some benevolent spirit-essence entered the "M" part of "HITOMI" when the "M" key wasn't working, who pressed the second "I" key? And what engineering wonderball put two huge tanks of human death-juice on top of the tallest building in the city? "What's the worst that could happen?" One guess. [daffy]

Appleseed is not a favorite, but it seems like an amusing watch.

You saw the newer Appleseed; check out the older , non CG one. It's definitely better, imo.

Have heard of Last Exile, haven't seen it yet. I've also heard good things about Desert Punk. I *almost* included Paranoia Agent, but decided against it. Mainly b/c it's my least favorite of Kon's work- I vastly prefer his films.

"Slayers" was a cool tv and OAV series with Lina Inverse, Gourry, Amelia, and company...too bad Naga the Serpent didn't appear in the tv series. I also like "Kare Kano" although the anime ends in midstory from a dispute with the creator and the anime producers... and one has to purchase the later manga books to finish up the storylines.

I enjoy anime, particularly romance comedies and action adventure stories...great character development, depth, and continuity in which some events in previous episodes were referenced and mentioned in later episodes.

Cardcaptor Sakura is hands down the best anime series I have ever watched! [thumbup] I wrote a 1,809 word essay on exactly why I think this. Too bad I can't get it published. Here is how I conclude that essay: “After reading all twelve volumes of the manga, viewing all 70 episodes, both movies and four shorts, admiring all the beautiful qualities of each version, laughing hard numerous times, and even crying during one especially touching episode, I have determined that the ultimate message of Cardcaptor Sakura is thus: Everyone deserves to be loved, no matter who you are and who you’re in love with. What this world needs is more love….and more tolerance.”

My personal favorite is Blue Exorcist. Yes, it is full of cliches. Yes, the plot isn't the most original. However the anime presents many relatable characters (especially Rin - it's weird that I relate with a demon) and the twenty five episodes seem to have great pacing. Not too fast and not too slow. I can only remember one "filler" episode and even it had an important ending. I would recommend giving it a watch.
I would also recommend - though everyone has seen it - Death Note. Just terrific, really keeps you hungry for more. Although the middle of it might piss you off, like it did me, just stick with it and it will pay off in the end

Lately I have been revisiting old Favorites viewing with a friend. We are currently watching the SI FI Action series "Solty Rei", I forgot how good this is. I have viewed fairly new release's like Horror series "Another" and the comedy SI FI series "Hataraku Maou-sama!" about a demon in a ancient battle who ends up on Earth in modern day Japan and goes to work at Mac Ronalds (think Donalds) . The English title of this series is I believe "The Devil is a part timer". Lastly there is "Rio Rainbow Gate" a fun comedy about a female dealer "Rio" who works at the Howard Hotel, Resort and Casino. The owner Tom Howard is quite an interesting demanding boss. I would agree both "Death Note" and "Darker than Black" are worth watching. Nato.

In the Philippines, most people who were young in the day remember Voltes V. I also remember a lesser known anime movie then, World War 1980X. I prefer tokusatsu, though, such as Uchu Keiji Shaider.

Well, there's my recent encounter with Girls und Panzer: high school girls participate in tankery, shooting at each other from World War II-era tanks. With "safe" shells, of course, that only make blast craters in the earth and scorched dents in steel armor; the li'l squeakies are never hurt, despite all the shooting. Apparently, this is analogous to high school football, but for girls ... in armored tanks ... painted pink ... rolling around the streets of town. So, either Japan is certifiably insane, or they think we Americans are colossally cuckoo; perhaps some combination of the two. However, looking past the preposterous premise, it carries its story very well, taking cues from Lucas' Star Wars, blending the drama of conflict with the giggly fun of cutesy schoolgirls. I can see the charm in it, not the least of which is the characterization: the critical why the girls do what they do.

I hope everyone is watching or has watched "Sword Art Online" a long but very well done series. I 'am also currently watching "Flowers of Evil" a shorter very dark series a boy takes home a female classmate's dirty gym uniform (he has a crush on the girl) and what occurs because of this leads to an interesting and very complex plot.
